My aunt said to me earlier
"If it weren't for you moving here, she would have been heading for adult day care." Her as in my grandmother.
I replied
"I'm not paid, it's not volunteer and I'm doing it kicking and screaming"
She came back with
"That's what care giver means!"
My grandmother really isn't that old. I know people older then her in great condition. She hasn't been to the doctor since '97 though. Until last month....
Congestive heart failure
Fluid in and around the lungs
ammonia (Whatever way to spell that)
Diabities
Minor heart attack in the past
along with a slew of other things.
Now, I know this can be overwhelming for a person. I understand that. But when it gets to the point that I have to sponge bathe, read the menu for (tv guide menu) and otherwise be a slave to this person, it gets to me.
I did not move here to become a slave. Nor a taxi driver. Not a chef either.
It's not that I mind helping, because I really don't mind it at all, but really? Sponge batheing? Just not my cup of tea.
